Muskogee Concrete Pros is the Muskogee starting point for poured slabs under houses, room additions, garages and carports. Send the dimensions, what the slab will support and whether plans are drawn. Request a free quote and a local concrete contractor will call you back to review the details.
Slab-on-grade construction is common across eastern Oklahoma. On clay that moves with the seasons, the difference between a slab that stays put and one that cracks through the living room often comes down to soil prep, steel and grade beams.
Interior slabs and additions
Slabs under heated space usually get a vapor barrier, compacted fill, rebar or post-tension cables, and thickened beams under load-bearing walls. Plumbing and electrical sleeves are set before the pour, so the plumber and slab contractor need to coordinate. For an addition, ask how the new slab will tie to the existing foundation and how the two will be kept from moving separately.
Many addition slabs need engineered plans and a building permit; check with the city or county.
Garage and carport slabs
A garage floor needs a slight pitch toward the door so melting ice and rinse water run out. Ask about a smooth troweled finish that cleans easily, and whether you may want epoxy later, since some sealers and curing compounds can interfere with coatings. A carport pad with posts may need deeper footings at each column so storm wind cannot lift the roof.
If the slab will hold a workshop or vehicle lift, see shop slabs.
Soil and testing
On new construction, a soil report can show how much the clay will move and what the slab design should allow for. Ask whether the contractor recommends moisture conditioning or removing and replacing the top layer. Structural work may also need foundation inspections before the pour. See foundations for footings and stem walls.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a vapor barrier?
Under living space or anywhere flooring will go down, a vapor barrier is standard. Ask the contractor what thickness they plan.
How long before framing can start?
Often within a few days, but heavy loads and point loads wait longer. Follow the contractor's or engineer's guidance.
